Zibonele FM, one of Khayelitsha’s most influential community radio stations, is on the brink of a significant milestone as the City Council has given in-principle approval for the discounted sale of its leased property. This property sale, which also includes adjacent land, aims to provide Zibonele FM with a permanent base, allowing the station to bolster its services and impact within the community. The proposal now awaits further process and final Council approval.
Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, emphasized the crucial role local radio plays in connecting communities, noting, “Zibonele FM’s programming is essential for sharing news, promoting initiatives, and keeping residents informed. This station’s influence strengthens community ties.”
Zibonele FM has deep roots in Khayelitsha, launching in 1993 from a modest shipping container and later becoming South Africa’s first licensed community radio station in 1995. This proposed ownership move will provide long-term stability and enable the station to expand its offerings, such as its accredited Radio Production Course, which supports local talent and job creation.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis expressed pride in supporting the initiative, stating, “Zibonele FM is a cherished institution and a true pillar of the community. We are excited to see it thrive as the rightful owner of its space.”
This sale represents more than a property transaction—it is an investment in a community resource that continues to uplift and inform the people of Khayelitsha.
