Continuing to move the creative conversation forward, Jazzart Dance Theatre, will commemorate South Africa’s 30 years of Democracy with a stirring, emotive and compelling mixed bill - Four Frames of Freedom. The performances will take place at Artscape on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th November 2024.

This latest mixed bill is expected to attract its fair share of attention with the line-up including the works toured to Durban, Johannesburg, Rwanda and Pakistan.   The three toured works will be accompanied by a new piece performed by the Jazzart and Baba Yaya trainees, which pays homage to the resilience of youth born since 1994.

Choreographers Sifiso Kweyama, MANACAN (Ciara Baldwin & Nathan Bartman) and Lihle Mfene will present this exciting showcase, which include:

I Am African - Sifiso Kweyama (Jazzart’s Head of Training) honours the interconnectedness of South Africa's diverse population, cultural diversity and our country’s shared vision of unity and hope.

Ziyawa - Sifiso’s additional offering includes a new short work to be performed by the trainees which expresses our culture of inclusivity and acceptance expressed in a form that mirrors Cape Town’s fun-filled energy!

Dark Flock - choreographed by the London-based MANACAN, explores themes of resilience referencing the crow’s impeccable will to live and thrive, no matter the environment or circumstance. The crow flies high despite all the heavy, negative stigmatisation it has been marked with, and teaches us that life is not defined by what others may believe is the truth.

Battlefield - choreographed by Lihle Mfene, a former Jazzart Company dancer, explores the journey of breaking free from societal constraints.  It embraces authenticity in a world that often dictates how we should feel and be and challenges us to reclaim our true selves.

Jazzart’s performances and dancers have been described by audiences as, “… [an] absolutely beautiful world-class production that deserves to tour beyond South Africa’s borders. It has everything that makes watching a dance production worthwhile—pulsating energy, breathtaking choreography, skilled ensemble work by the dancers, beautiful and effective costuming, superb lighting, and a soundtrack that resonates deeply, connecting you with the dancers on stage. I loved this inspiring work!”

To experience this exciting mixed bill for yourself, tickets are available through Webtickets or Artscape Dial-A-Seat.  Don't miss this opportunity to celebrate our democracy through the transformative power of dance.
