In celebration of Global Recycling Day on Tuesday, 18 March 2025, Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate showcased its commitment to inspiring young minds and schools to combat plastic pollution through creativity and innovation. A vibrant exhibition at the Cape Town Civic Centre also educated the public on sustainable waste management practices, highlighting the city’s ongoing efforts to create a cleaner, greener future.
Inspiring the Next Generation at Westlake Primary School
As part of the Global Recycling Day initiatives, the City’s Urban Waste Management team, alongside their beloved anti-litter mascot, Bingo, visited Westlake Primary School. The interactive session aimed to empower learners and staff to play an active role in protecting the environment for generations to come.
The programme was filled with practical tips on reducing waste and diverting recyclables from landfills. One of the highlights was the hands-on demonstration of creating eco bricks —2L plastic bottles stuffed with non-recyclable waste like chip packets, lollipop sticks, and ice sucker wrappers. These eco bricks can be repurposed into functional items such as chairs, tables, and bookshelves, offering a creative and sustainable solution to plastic pollution.
A City-Wide Mission for Sustainability
Alderman Grant Twigg, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, emphasised the importance of innovation in tackling waste challenges. “Our society is burdened by waste, so creativity and innovation are critical to achieving sustainability. Through initiatives like recycling and eco bricks, we’re turning waste into opportunities that benefit our schools and communities,” he said.
The City’s “Think Twice” kerbside recycling collection service is a key part of this mission. Residents are encouraged to check if they fall within the service’s catchment area using the City’s updated waste recyclers map. The map also provides details of local recycling companies and initiatives for those not yet covered by the service. Additionally, City drop-off facilities are available for residents to dispose of recyclables free of charge.
Bingo: Spreading the Anti-Litter Message
Bingo, the City’s anti-litter mascot, has become a familiar face at schools, beaches, and sporting events across Cape Town. By November 2024, Bingo had made over 600 appearances, with an additional 352 visits during the festive season. Despite a recent hijacking incident, Bingo is back in action and available for bookings to spread the anti-litter message in a fun and engaging way.
Residents and schools are encouraged to book Bingo for events, though availability is limited and operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
