The 2025 Absa Cape Epic brought the world’s best mountain bikers to Paarl, and with them, an incredible opportunity to showcase the region’s natural beauty, trails, and warm hospitality. As the official destination partner, Drakenstein Municipality left no stone unturned in ensuring that Stages 3 and 4 of the race were not just thrilling for riders but also a celebration of Paarl’s unique offerings.

A Global Stage for Paarl’s Beauty and Hospitality

With its breathtaking trails winding through the majestic granite boulders of Paarl Mountain, the race route provided a challenging yet rewarding experience for riders. Despite the extreme heat reaching a blistering 41 degrees on Stage 3, competitors pushed through, and their determination was matched by the enthusiastic support from the local community. The sheer beauty of the Paarl landscape, combined with the warmth of its people, made a lasting impression on the global cycling community.

The #VisitPaarl campaign was prominently displayed throughout the event, ensuring that Paarl’s name resonated with the thousands of fans, both on-site and tuning in worldwide. Executive Mayor Stephen Korabie further elevated Paarl’s brand by sporting a boldly branded #VisitPaarl shirt, reinforcing the town’s commitment to tourism and adventure sports.

Paarl Trails Leave a Lasting Impact

Paarl’s rugged yet scenic trails tested the riders to their limits, with technical descents and high-speed sections through the granite-laden landscape. The race village at Fairview and Spice Route Destination provided world-class hospitality, allowing riders and fans to experience the best of Paarl’s food, wine, and culture.

Among the standout moments was the inspiring performance of the Drakenstein Municipality’s own Kris Coetzee and Justin van Niekerk, riding under the banner of "#VisitPaarl – powered by Drakenstein Municipality." Their determination and endurance symbolized the strength of the region’s cycling culture, inspiring both local riders and international competitors.

A Warm Farewell, but Not Goodbye

As Stage 5 kicked off from Fairview with Executive Mayor Korabie firing the starting gun, riders bid farewell to Paarl, but not without fond memories. Legendary Danish rider Annika Langvad, who took on Paarl’s demanding trails, summed up the experience, saying, "It was insanely hot out there, but the trails and scenery were absolutely incredible."

The race not only challenged the riders physically but also showcased Paarl’s world-class cycling infrastructure. With an event of this magnitude, the exposure for Paarl as a premier cycling and adventure destination has been invaluable. Riders and teams from across the globe have already expressed interest in returning to explore Paarl’s trails at a more leisurely pace.

A Community Effort with a Lasting Impact

Drakenstein Municipality’s successful hosting of the Cape Epic stages was a collective effort, involving local businesses, schools, cycling clubs, and enthusiastic supporters. From cheering schoolchildren to dedicated volunteers, the community’s spirit shone brightly, reinforcing Paarl’s reputation as a welcoming destination for sporting events.

Dan Nicholl, Programme Director of the Absa Cape Epic, summed it up best at the Rider Dining Event: "Expect international riders to be back to try out your trails." With this level of exposure and the success of #VisitPaarl, Paarl has firmly established itself on the global cycling map.

So, while we say goodbye to the Cape Epic for now, we know it’s not the last time these riders will be back. Paarl has made its mark, and the world has taken notice.
