In alignment with Earthshot’s mission to inspire environmental restoration and innovation, Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) is excited to present its annual “Take a Hike Day” on Saturday, 16 November 2024.
While the official “Take A Hike Day” is on 17 November, TMACC invites the greater community to join them a day earlier, to enjoy the trails and actively contribute to keeping them clean.
It is timeous to also have this special event in the week that Table Mountain celebrated the 13th anniversary of being voted as one of the New7Wonders of Nature, an acknowledgement of the mountain’s beauty and local conservation efforts.
Beginning at 7 AM at the foot of the Platteklip Gorge Trail, registered participants will receive water and a waste bag to support their hike and clean-up efforts. Along the way, hikers are encouraged to pick up litter, playing an active role in TMACC’s efforts to leave it better than we found it
Upon reaching the Twelve Apostles Terrace, participants can dispose of collected litter in bins provided and will receive a complimentary cable car ride back down the mountain, along with a snack pack, as a thank-you for their contributions to the day.
“We’re excited to celebrate ‘Take a Hike Day’ with our community, giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy these beautiful trails while actively protecting the environment,” said Selma Hercules, Executive Director of TMACC.
“We believe in doing the right thing for our planet, and this event embodies our commitment to conservation. It’s a simple yet impactful way to safeguard this remarkable natural wonder, one step at a time.”
To ensure everyone can participate safely, TMACC has scheduled 17 November as a reserve day should weather conditions prevent the hike on the 16th.
“’Take a Hike Day’ has grown into a cherished annual event, bringing people together to champion conservation while connecting with the natural beauty of Table Mountain. It is more than just a clean-up, it is about creating a shared sense of purpose and knowing we are all playing a part in preserving this extraordinary landmark,” Hercules added.
TMACC encourages everyone to register early by completing the form on the TMACC Facebook and Instagram pages, as spaces are limited. For more details or to sign up, please follow TMACC on social media.
