This year’s National Nutrition Week (9 - 15 October) is all about making informed food choices with the theme, Eat Right for a Better Life. The City of Cape Town is encouraging residents to focus on healthier eating habits and balanced nutrition to support overall well-being.
According to the South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (SANHANES), the country is facing some concerning statistics:
- One in three South Africans suffers from hunger.
- One in five is overweight or obese.
- Only a small portion of South Africans consume enough fruits and vegetables daily.
Councillor Patricia Van der Ross, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, stresses the importance of good nutrition. “While we know financial access to nutritious food can be tough, there are ways to eat healthier without spending too much. What we eat plays a critical role in our health. A well-balanced diet fuels the body, supports growth, and helps prevent chronic diseases.”
City Health Initiatives: The City of Cape Town has several programs to promote healthier living:
- The Live Well Challenge encourages healthy weight management through a combination of balanced eating and physical activity over eight weeks in communities across the city.
- Nutrition education focuses on optimal nutrition during pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood, supporting breastfeeding and healthy feeding practices.
- Clinics monitor the nutritional status of patients by regularly measuring weight, height, and mid-upper arm circumference. Dietitians assist those identified as obese or malnourished, while children under five are managed according to specific malnutrition guidelines.
Simple Tips for a Healthier Diet:
