International travellers arriving at Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) can now look forward to a smoother and faster arrivals process, thanks to a new partnership between the Border Management Authority (BMA), the Western Cape Government (WCG), and the City of Cape Town (COCT).

Launched on 18 August 2025, the initiative sees 48 assistant port control officers seconded by the City and Province, nearly doubling immigration processing capacity from 66 to 114 officials. This significant boost aims to cut queues, improve security, and enhance Cape Town’s reputation as a world-class destination.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber praised the collaboration as “a vote of confidence in the BMA,” highlighting that despite a R4,3 billion budget shortfall, the authority is making real progress. “With the WCG and City stepping up, we can enhance national security while driving tourism growth and job creation,” he said.

Premier Alan Winde noted that the WCG’s 24 secondees will also act as ambassadors for the province. “This aligns with our economic strategy to grow tourist arrivals, support small businesses, and create jobs,” he said.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis stressed the real-world impact of faster processing: “A smoother airport experience means tourists reach Table Mountain before sunset, and tour guides in Langa don’t lose business because of delays. When we work together, the whole tourism economy benefits.”

The secondees will assist with immigration and customs processing, with City law enforcement officers providing additional safety functions such as search, seizure, and detention where needed.

This joint effort underscores how intergovernmental cooperation can directly improve visitor experiences, strengthen security, and support Cape Town’s tourism-driven economy.
